Who released it is up for debate, a labels loss was a fans gain when Kendrick Lamar’s sophomore set To Pimp A Butterfly hit iTunes a week early.
Despite the early leak, the reviews for his project have been stellar. With that, you can assume that word-of-mouth will spread to actual sales.
One positive sign of that is Spotify. The music streaming platform reports that Lamar broke the single day streaming record when his album became available Sunday night.
Per Stereo Gum:
According to The Wall Street Journal, another casualty of this surprise release was Spotify’s record for most streams in a single day worldwide by a new release; To Pimp A Butterfly racked up an impressive 9.6 million full start-to-finish streams between 12:01AM and 11:59PM yesterday.
That record had been set just a month ago by Drake’s surprise “mixtape” If You’re Reading This It’s Too Late, which accumulated 6.8 million listens in a single day. I look forward to whichever major surprise-release rap album breaks the record again next month — Kanye, anyone?
I agree with Pete. Somewhere Kanye is sitting back like, “just wait on it.”
