MC Lyte knows what’s it’s like to be a female emcee in a male dominated world.
Lyte burst on the scene in the late 80’s when hip-hop was still trying to find its way in the world. Big Daddy Kane, Kool G Rap, Biz Markie were a few of the names that ruled the rap world at the time. Female rappers were few and far between. Yet Lyte managed to carve a niche for herself as not just a capable emcee for a female, but a capable emcee, period.
She solidified herself as a star with hits like “Cha Cha Cha”, “Lyte As A Rock”, and my dad’s favorite song, “Cappacino”. Her star continued to shine deep through the nineties and 2000’s.
Now, Lyte has hung up the mic for the most part. Her new gigs include acting and radio. That doesn’t mean that she doesn’t still have her fingers on the pulse of hip-hop.
in an interview with Hello Beautiful, Lyte spoke about raps two female heavyweights, Iggy Azalea and Nicki Minaj. She praised Nick’s business acumen and asked the world to let Iggy live.
