In 1993, adidas hooked up with one of the most dangerous defensive forces in NBA history, Dikembe Mutombo.
A longtime anchor in the paint for the Denver Nuggets, Mutombo alongside Laphonso Ellis and Mahmoud Abdul Rauf turned Denver into a contender in the Western Conference. Mutombo did his part by blocking anything that came near the rim. Mutombo would go on to play for the Hakws, 76ers, Knicks, Nets and Rockets before calling it quits in 2009.
While he was the best defensive force in the NBA, German sneaker brand, adidas came knocking on his door. When he answered, a signature sneaker was awaiting.
20 years later, Adidas is doing a big re-release of Mutombo’s sneaker. The “black/purple” version of the Mutombo to drop on October 5 for $105 at select Adidas Originals retailers.
