America The Beautiful: The First Indian Miss America Is Crowned And America Reacts

Miss America

As we reported this past weekend, the Miss America pageant was set to take a trend towards what America is looking like now as opposed to  typical crown winners of the past. Tattooed, gun toting women with accents were on full display this weekend in Atlantic City.

History was made when the first Indian Miss America was crowned. Nina Davuluri’s win might be good for the pageant and a glimpse of hope for future contestants, there was a percentage of American’s who weren’t feeling the new winner. After the announcement of her win, a flood of racists tweets hit the net.

“If you’re #MissAmerica you should have to be American,” said one. “Well they just picked a Muslim for Miss America. That must’ve made Obama happy. Maybe he had a vote,” vented one person.

Something similar happened when Rima Fakih was crowned Miss USA in 2010. Fakih is of Lebanese descent, and many were quick to try to link her to the militant group Hezbollah.
